Pay It Forward...and Watch Magic Unfold!

As a voracious reader, I have a stack of books at my bedside at all times, ready for my nightly ritual of reading before sleep. And because I'm a self-help junkie, most of my books are about improving my life, which provides great fodder for my client's lives.

I'm particularly fond of books like The Secret, along with its precursor, Excuse Me, Your Life Is Waiting--both which use practical exercises to convince us (skeptics) that we really are being looked after, loved, and taken care of.

And that we really are cosmic magnets who can manifest anything we want.

Recently, I ran across another similar set of books by Pam Grout, and was instantly hooked. I wanted to try some of the exercises she outlines because it's fun AND because I'm skeptical by nature.

A bit of back story: it is not lost on me that magic happens to me all the time. Really. In many different forms, since I was a kid. It's comical sometimes because my "luck" and good fortune are very prolific.

You'd think I'd be a seasoned believer by now, but I'm not.

Sadly, I remain a skeptic about getting things that I really, really want. I receive free coffee and win raffles so often that they no longer surprise me.

But when it comes to what I long for, can I count on receiving those things, too?

In E-cubed, Grout shared a story about running around a large city with her daughter, leaving five dollar bills for people to find. She then challenged her readers to do the same, AND to expect some form of universal response within 72 hours.

So at the end of my vacation last week, I took her up on the challenge.

On March 7th, I posted this on Facebook:

"I paid it forward today and was privileged to see the results. I was nearly in tears watching how it lit up her face; how she took a picture of her surprise; and how she kept staring and smiling. I was thrilled she had no idea who it was from."

The weird part is, I'd been led by my intuition to pay it forward to that particular empty seat. And when a woman sat down, she was told by the guy in charge that she was in the wrong seat. Undeterred, she said she'd been told to sit there by another personnel member.

Funny how magic works.

A mere 3 days later, I posted this:

"Money has been floating around me for weeks: free hotel stays; rebate checks in the mail; a hefty raise at work; gifts of coffee, a ferry ride, and Tony Robbins tickets; and a tax return that is just enough to pay off some debt!"
Do I think there is a correlation between paying it forward and receiving so much in return? You bet I do!

And do you know what the most surprising thing is?

Much of this monetary reward happened in just ONE WEEK!

And here's another piece of magic to add:

When I purchased Pam's first book of the series, E-squared, I kept its sequel on my Amazon wish list to purchase at a later date.

Last week when I visited a used book store on an island that is only accessible by ferry, the first book I saw was a brand-new copy of E-cubed. It was sitting on the shelf in such a way that it was impossible for me not to spot it. The clincher? It cost just 8 bucks!

You guys, this is what magic looks like.

It feels like a giddy high.

And if often seems impossible.

But it is oh, sooooo fun to play!

Do you recognize magic when it happens?

Be on the look-out for it, because it's everywhere. You just have to be open to the possibility that it's real.

Then expect it to show up in some mysterious fashion. I say "mysterious" because it rarely shows up how we think it ought to.

I could've expected blessings in the form of bills; what I received was a big cosmic payback in the form of experiences, treats, dates, discounts, fun, and yes, some cash, too!

If you don't believe me, try paying it forward with a kind gesture, a free coffee, or anything you feel compelled to offer
.

Then watch your life explode with a magical high-five!

Moments of Miracles

Have you ever experienced being taken care of by a power greater than yourself? A moment in time when you knew that you hadn't created the situation, but it felt like a serendipitous, even magical, event?

I've experienced so many of these over five decades that they have become commonplace. Two incidences stand out as monumental, however, because they were seemingly so out-of-my-control, yet they fell back into place without any effort on my part.

They also happened months apart, which confirmed to me at the time, that I was being cared for beyond my wildest understanding...

I was nearing the end of my marriage decades ago when my van was broken into in the dark parking lot of a meeting I was attending. The sliding door window had been smashed, but as far as I could tell, nothing else had been disturbed.

On my way to the police station, I phoned Jack (my then-husband) to inform him.

"Someone just called about your briefcase," Jack replied.

"My briefcase?" I stammered. "I didn't know it was missing!"

Apparently, the vandals had thrown my black bag onto a dark side street near the location of my meeting, and minutes later a passerby spotted it.

How weird is that?

My hospital work badge was attached to the briefcase handles, and the passerby was a hospital employee on his way to work. He called my home as soon as he arrived at the hospital--just minutes before I called Jack.

I know...serendipitous, right?

I realized later that my gym bag had also been nabbed but I figured it was a small loss; I also knew that I had no identification in that bag.

The following morning, though, I received another phone call that surprised me. "I have your gym bag," a tender voice told me.

"But how? There's no identification in that bag!"

"Well, there is," the woman continued. "That's how I got your number."

The only scenario that made any sense was that while the vandals rummaged through both bags, things were shuffled from one bag to the other, with one ID ending up in one bag, and another ID finding its way into the other bag!

How does that happen?

Eight months later, a similar event happened which confirmed that a bigger hand was operating in my life.

I chose to see it as God, and I still do, but it doesn't matter what you may call it; we all have moments of miracles that are difficult to explain.

But do you recognize them?

I left the house before noon and drove to my office a few miles away. I planned on being gone for the entire afternoon, but when I completed my paperwork in record-breaking time, I realized I had time to return home before picking up the kids from school.

Fifty minutes had elapsed when I pulled back into the garage and entered my home. All of the cabinets were wide open, and I realized with a panic that my home had been robbed. I backed out the door, fearing the vandals were still inside.

I grabbed my cell phone from the car as an elderly gentleman walked by. I asked him to stay with me and he happily obliged. As I paced on my front lawn dialing 911, a truck slowly drove by with four teen-age boys inside.

I gave the Dispatch information about the burglary, and within minutes, an officer drove up and told me that she was going to pursue a truck that had been seen loitering in the neighborhood.

"One just drove by," I offered.

The officer sped away, but returned about ten minutes later. She held out her hand and as I moved closer, she asked, "Do you recognize this?"

"Yes," I winced. "It's my husband's watch." (By this time, he was my ex-husband).

"We got 'em!" she happily reported. "I only found this in the bed of their truck, but it's enough evidence."

I was stunned (again).

My home had been ransacked: every cabinet had been gone through and every drawer had been overturned. Papers, toys, and garbage were strewn everywhere. The VCR and camcorder were missing and the television was shifted in its place. My jewelry box had been nabbed, and the vandals even drank a soda from the refrigerator and opened the kids’ Christmas presents!

As the officer gently probed for answers about missing items, I retrieved registration forms from a file that had hammer marks where the lock had once been. My back door had been kicked in, and I couldn’t believe how much had been taken in less than one hour. Since they'd been caught, I was hopeful that I’d see some of my belongings again but I wasn’t counting on it. The officer had already told me that everything could have already been sold.

Less than twenty-four hours later, however, a lieutenant called and said, “We have all of your missing items. You can pick them up at any time.”

What?

After the teens were apprehended, they confessed to storing my items at their homes, a block away from mine. Four backpacks had been stuffed and others were secluded elsewhere, ready to be sold. When they drove by my house that afternoon, they were planning to “finish the job,” but my presence in the front yard thwarted them.

I excitedly piled the kids into the car and drove to the station. All my belongings were neatly arranged on tables with identification tags on each item. It was like discovering new toys at Christmas!

The officer standing behind me said, “This happens in less than twenty percent of all robberies. You’re lucky.”

“Really? This is the second time it’s happened to me this year, and I got everything back both times.”

“You must have some strong karma, lady,” he said. “We never hear of that happening twice!”

I did have strong karma—God—and I was being shown, once again, how I was tenderly and lovingly being looked after. More than $6500.00 in merchandise had been taken, and it was all returned in less than one day.

Today I expect daily miracles, and God faithfully delivers.

Be on the look-out for your own moments of miracles. Because they are everywhere! They show up when you least expect them, and they're often disguised as something completely different.

So how do we recognize them, you ask?

Because in their wake, you will be left feeling stunned, in awe, mystified, or confused. You won't be able to figure out how the hell it all happened so effortlessly.

But most of all, it will feel and look like magic.

Your Life Wants to Get Your Attention

How do you know how to navigate through your life?

Is it by chance, fate, by sheer force of will? Do you make decisions from logic, intuition, or from faithful practice?

I tend to have weird/wonderful spiritual events that predict monumental changes in my life. They show up at the oddest times, in the most unconventional ways, but they are always a jaw-dropping experience.

Take, for instance, the moment my father died.

I knew it the minute it happened. We were driving to the airport en route to see him for his birthday; he'd been sick and wasn't expected to live much longer.

I was quietly contemplating life when I felt a whoooosh travel through the center of my body, as if steam was coming off of my torso. I turned to my husband and calmly, yet confidently, told him: "Dad just died."

After we'd landed hours later, it was confirmed that at the moment of my experience, my father had, indeed, passed away.

When I became pregnant with my third child, the other two were only 3 years and 14 months old, so I wasn't exactly excited about another pregnancy so soon...until I heard a statement so loud and clear in my head, I couldn't deny it:
"This baby is meant to be here because in two years your life will be drastically different."

I accepted the message as fact because it wasn't anything I'd made up. It also helped me relax about having another baby (miraculously, it did not send me into panic-mode about my future!).

And two years later--almost to the day--my husband's secret life was exposed, which threw our future into a new trajectory.

And my spiritual events only intensified.

For months I was in grief, but I also felt carried by something outside of me. I heard encouraging words whispered in my ear, and I felt tangible guidance lifting me out of bed and walking me down the hall when I had little strength to do so on my own.

I knew that I was being looked after by a Presence I couldn't see, but could feel and hear.

Years after moving to a new state, and months after ending another relationship, I began sensing male energy in my home. I knew "he" was safe, kind, and loving, but I had no idea who he was, or why he was becoming an almost permanent fixture in my life.

Four years later, the puzzle pieces came together when a man from my past shared his experiences of "being" in my home, even though he lived 3,000 miles away. He accurately described my house in full detail--a place he had never seen.

Why do these wild and crazy experiences happen, you ask? And why are they transmitted to me like this?

Your guess is as good as mine, because I can't make this shit up. And if I hadn't experienced it, I may not believe me, either. I understand if you're feeling a bit skeptical right now.

But I've learned to trust these unusual experiences because they have become a constant in my life. I am sensitive to this form of communication, which means I'm more apt to hear it.

The messages appear out of nowhere and everything in my body knows them to be true. I respond as if the messages are being delivered by a trusted friend, even when I'm baffled about the wild and goofy ways they got my attention.

They've taught me to trust a benevolent force, they've guided me toward necessary changes, and they've offered epiphanies and lessons about my life.

And I am once again reminded of how beautifully we are being looked after, guided, and loved.

I happen to believe that my experiences are all about communing with God, but you may have another name for it: the Universe, Mother Nature, aliens--whatever you believe to be at the center of this beautiful, crazy and vast world.

What is the language you hear or respond to best? In what ways is your life trying to get your attention?

Trust your intuition; believe that coincidences are meant to be gifts for your happiness and well-being; and know that you receive messages in the best way you can hear them.

So pay attention to those messages, no matter how whacky they seem, or in whatever form they appear.

They might just change your life.
